Position Description:
The Melt Shop Process Engineer is a ?hands-on? position that requires close collaboration with the EAF and Caster Operators and Operations Management. Candidates for this position must possess a degree in Metallurgy or have equivalent experience. A minimum of 5 years? experience working as a Process Engineer in steel making is required. Viable candidates must be comfortable with new and special product development, failure analysis and process data collection.
Responsibilities:
Assist in the development of new products and define specific melting, refining and casting standard practices to achieve proper chemistries and steel cleanliness control.
Oversee slab quality evaluation programs (scarfing) with tie back to scrap mix utilization. Serve as a key player in the Scrap Quality Management System working closely with other engineers and Melt Shop Operations.
Work with Operations to improve Slab Yard logistics and slab handling.
Involvement in all CAPEX project work at caster and slab yard where there are product quality elements.
Serve as an operational resource as needed for failure analysis and investigations in casting operational issues (general supporting role to the Operations group).
Must be proficient with databases, MS products, and mass scale data analysis, including capability to interpret analytical results.
Generate improved efficiency of casting processes and systems and work with Automation resources to improve caster data collection.
o Generate interim manual data collection systems as needed and maintain slab quality performance measurements.
o Analyze downstream Hot Strip Mill and other customer data to make process improvements in slab quality.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineer or equivalent experience.
Minimum of 5 years? experience.
Previous experience in EAF melting, refining and continuous casting.
Exposure to or experience with Automation Systems is a plus, but not required.
Focus on product continuous improvement at the EAF, LMF and Caster.
